G-R-I-T  AWARDS

How We Apply It

G-R-I-T is built into every session — not as a separate concept, but as part of the training environment. Every session provides the opportunity for gymnasts to develop these qualities over time.

Gymnasts are supported through:

Physical preparation, including strength, flexibility, and control
Skill development through progressive, structured learning
Understanding how to approach challenges safely and effectively
Learning how to stay focused, listen, and apply corrections

We prioritise strong foundations, clear understanding, and consistent development to support long-term progress.

G-R-I-T & Learning

G-R-I-T reflects how gymnasts learn, not just what they achieve.

Through training, gymnasts develop understanding, apply corrections, and build their skills progressively. As they engage with this process, they recognise their development and take ownership of their learning.

By taking ownership of both their training and their accomplishments, gymnasts learn to recognise their own strengths — building confidence, independence, and a clear understanding of what they are capable of.

G-R-I-T is relevant at every stage of development and reflects the qualities required to progress within the sport and beyond, with support and guidance adapted appropriately to each gymnast’s age and stage of development.

What the G-R-I-T Awards Recognise

The G-R-I-T Awards recognise the qualities that support long-term progress, both within gymnastics and beyond.

They are awarded based on how a gymnast approaches their training, develops over time, and engages with the learning process.

They recognise:

Commitment to learning and development
Willingness to engage with structured training and progression
Recognition of personal improvement
Consistency and continued effort

Development of leadership

The G-R-I-T Awards sit alongside each gymnast’s individual development programme, recognising attributes and personal development that benefit the gymnast both in and outside of the gym.

Gumption to learn through challenge

Developing the confidence to engage with new skills, communicate when something feels difficult, and not be held back by fear of failure — recognising that mistakes are part of learning, and working through challenge with structured progressions, support, and guidance.

Rectitude to hold your values, even in the face of opposition.

Developing the ability to recognise and maintain the right behaviours and standards, both within and outside of training — staying focused on personal progress, not being led by poor influence, and not allowing external opinions or outcomes to define them.

Inspiration to be your own hero and inspire others.

Developing the confidence to think independently, solve problems, and take ownership of their progress — bringing a proactive approach to training, engaging positively with coaching, and recognising their own capability while setting a strong example for others.

Tenacity to see things through to the end.

Consistency and commitment in every session, working towards clear goals and strong standards, striving for continual improvement, and moving forward with purpose—valuing both process and progress while building confidence, resilience, and pride.

What G-R-I-T Means at BGS

At Brackley Gymnastics School, progress is not defined by skills alone, but by the qualities that underpin how a gymnast learns, develops, and responds to challenge.

Our G-R-I-T framework reflects the core attributes that support long-term development within gymnastics and beyond.

Gumption, Rectitude, Inspiration, and Tenacity represent the foundations we believe are essential for meaningful progress — both within the gym and in wider development.

Each element provides a clear focus for what we develop and recognise, allowing us to support gymnasts not just in what they achieve, but how they approach their learning.

The G-R-I-T Awards reinforce these behaviours — recognising qualities that contribute to consistent progress and long-term development.
